CSA end-to-end process
The diagram below outlines the end-to-end statistical process that the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) takes to produce the crime data released on this website.
At the beginning of the data cycle, the CSA receives data from the Victoria Police Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP).
The CSA receives the raw data, checks for data quality issues and applies counting rules to produce the final CSA population datasets.
The datasets released each quarter, beginning March 2015, include:
- Offences recorded
- Alleged offender incidents
- Victim reports
- Family incidents
The annual financial year statistical release includes the above data and statistics generated from two additional datasets:
- Unique offenders
- Unique victims
Once the datasets have been produced they are analysed to identify movements and potential trends in the data. The resulting aggregated statistics are then signed off by the Chief Statistician and released on the CSA website.
The data is presented in PDF and Excel format as well as in the Crime by Location tool.
