The Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) today updated the COVID-19 Family Violence Data Portal, which examines Victorian family violence incidents and service use trends across more than 30 data indicators.
In its second release, the portal highlights administrative data collected during the most restrictive stages of the Victorian COVID-19 related lockdown measures, including data to 30 September 2020. This release also marks the inclusion of two new data sources, the Victim Assistance Program, contributing data on cases for eligible victims of family violence related crime, and Safe Steps, Victoria’s 24/7 family violence response centre.
Many data sources showed increases in family violence incidents or services during the third quarter of 2020 compared with the same period the prior year. Victoria Police family incidents increased 9.0% during this period, and the number of family violence related offences increased 11.9%.
There was a 20% increase in breach of family violence offences from the same period last year, with 14,896 offences recorded between 1 July and 30 September 2020.
