Key figures: Year to 30 June 2016

State wide figures

  • The number of offences recorded by police in the year to 30 June 2016 was 535,826. This is up 13.4% from 472,611 offences recorded in the same period last year.
  • Family incidents increased in the year to 30 June 2016, up 10% from 70,902 to 78,012.
  • There were 174,705 offender incidents recorded in the year to 30 June 2016, up 11.2% from 157,130 in the year to 30 June 2015.
  • Victim reports increased by 14.1% in year ending 30 June 2016 to 321,738 victim reports.

Offence trends

  • Between year ending June 2016 and 2015, the offence categories that showed a significant upward trend were:
  • Assault and related offences (up 11.1% from 37,633 to 41,806)
  • Robbery (up 14.2% from 2,530 to 2,888)
  • Dangerous and negligent acts endangering people (up 23.1% from 4,338 to 5,341)
  • Burglary/break and enter (up 12.6% from 46,250 to 52,087)
  • Theft (up 19.2% from 151,834 to 180,988)
  • Public nuisance offences (up 30.0% from 2,655 to 3,452)
  • Justice procedures (up 86.6% from 6,887 to 12,854). Note this increase is in part due to changes in legislation (please see the explanatory notes for information)
  • Breaches of orders (up 12.2% from 51,525 to 57,794)
  • Transport regulation offences (up 33.3% from 459 to 612)

The major offence categories that showed a significant downward trend were:

  • Disorderly and offensive conduct (down 12.2% from 19,387 to 17,018)
  • Regulatory driving offences (down 40.0% from 30 to 18)

No other offence category showed a statistically significant trend.

Local Government Area level figures

The five Local Government Areas with the highest offence rates were:

  1. Melbourne (25,870.8 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 1.7%)
  2. Latrobe (19,167.0 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 8.6%)
  3. Yarra (14,984.0 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 4.8%)
  4. Horsham (14,532.8 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 0.7%)
  5. Greater Dandenong (13,294.6 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 16.6%)

Unique victims

  • The number of victims recorded by police in 2015–16 was 246,106. This is up 12.0 per cent compared to 2014–15.
  • Of the 246,106 victims, 202,263 were person victims and 43,843 were organisations.
  • Males made up 56.1 per cent of all person victims, with female victims comprising 42.9 per cent.
  • The age group with the highest proportion of victims was 25–29 year olds, who made up 12.8 per cent of all person victims.
  • Unique victims aged 65 years and over made up 7.5 per cent of all victims in 2015–16.
  • 91.5 per cent of all person victims made only one report to police in 2015–16.

Unique alleged offenders

  • There were 81,918 alleged offenders recorded by police in 2015–16, up 3.3 per cent compared to 2014–15.
  • Of the 81,918 alleged offenders, 77.4 per cent (63,439) were males and 22.2 per cent (18,209) were females.
  • The age group with the highest proportion of alleged offenders was 20–24 year olds, who made up 16.4 per cent of all person offenders.
  • More than half (56.3 per cent) of all person offenders were between 15 and 35 years of age.
  • 67.2 per cent of all alleged offenders were involved in one incident in 2015–16.
  • The average number of incidents per offender in 2015–16 was 2.0 incidents per offender.
