Key figures: Year to 30 September 2015

 

State wide figures

  • The number of offences recorded by police in the year to 30 September 2015 was 482,959. This is up 6.0% from 455,728 offences recorded in the same period last year.
  • Family incidents increased in the year to 30 September 2015, up 9.6% from 66,011 to 72,376.
  • There were 164,941 offender incidents recorded in the year to 30 September 2015, up 6.8% from 154,445 in the year to September 2014.
  • Victim reports increased in the year to 30 September by 2.5% to 289,092 victim reports.

 

Offence trends

Between year ending September 2014 and 2015, the major offence categories that showed a significant upward trend were:

  • Stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour (up 9.4% from 11,066 to 12,104)
  • Bribery (up 800.0% from 5 to 45)
  • Drug use and possession (up 16.9% from 19,282 to 22,542)
  • Weapons and explosives offences (up 16.1% from 13,175 to 15,290)
  • Justice procedures (up 20.4% from 6,423 to 7,731)

All other offence categories were stable.

 

Local Government Area level figures

The five Local Government Areas with the highest offence rates were:

  1. Melbourne (25,853.7 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 0.6%)
  2. Latrobe (17,868.7 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 17.4%)
  3. Horsham (14,617.7 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 26.1%)
  4. Yarra (14,083.3 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, down 4.6%)
  5. Greater Dandenong (12,351.7 offences per 100,000 estimated resident population, up 15.4%)
